ThumbsUpGR

Knights of Council 7761 are using Art, Social Media, and Community involvement to promote LIFE.  Please see our main product, our Facebook page, open for viewing 24/7, search Facebook for “ThumbsUpGR”.  This project is still ongoing!  Please “like” our page!

For the whole year, our Knights have been promoting life with art.  From venues at OLC to the Right to Life Bike and hike, the Parish Festival of St. Joseph the worker, and the Pregnancy Resource Center walk for life, the Thumbs Up art was displayed and people participated by putting their thumb print on.  See the facebook page “thumbsUpGR”.  Currently the art has been displayed at Our Lady of Consolation Church.

On Monday October 17 from 9-noon, about 250 OLC students and Teachers toured the art for about 10-20 minute
s each.  The stuartatolc-thuoct1314dents heard about the Cedar Wood that is “junk” to the furniture industry, they typically burn it.  We use the “unwanted” wood, paint it and make it valuable to our art.  We have 12 columns of cedar tiles (like 12 tribes of Israel, and 12 apostles) and the tiles are connected like grapes on a vine to a cross that has 3 nails holding the 96 tile mosaic to the Shin.  Because the weight of all the tiles hang from the cross and nails that go through the middle stem of the Shin (that represents Jesus), we can visually show how the weight of the sins of all the people (symbolized by the 96 tiles) is bore by one God/Man, Jesus.   Jesus also said, “I am the way, the truth and the light, no one gets to the Father except through me” and the only physical connection of the tiles and the Shin is through the cross and the nails.

Some of the kids got to hold the 12″ long Roman army crucifixion nails.  The “Shin” was explained, it is an ancient letter from the hebrew alphabet and dates back more than 3,000 years and was part of the first written language.  The Shin represents the God of the Hebrews, and to draw a Shin, you start from one point and draw up, 3 separate lines which represent the 3 forces of the Hebrew God “Yahweh”, which are a main force, a force that will touch you, and a force that is in the air all around everywhere.  At the top of each line is a dash symbolizing fire, because whatever this God comes in contact with, there are “fireworks” as this God creates, destroys, changes, but nothing is ever the same after contact.

There were discussions of the Ultrasound, the right to LIFE, the Declaration of Independence, Creation, the Universe–depending on the age of the students—and the kids got to bang on the Shin, it makes a great steel drum!

Snow Shoveling Returns!

Winter may be coming in slow, but the snow is sure to come! Once again the Knights of Columbus will answer the call. Volunteers will be needed help keep the sidewalks clear for the Masses at Our Lady of Consolation this winter. No sign-up is necessary, but if you can arrive before mass early on days with snow we can always use your help. Just come, and make sure to sign in at one of the entries, and then grab a shovel or some salt! Thank you all for helping to keep our Parish Family safe!

Snow Shovelers Still Needed

Just a reminder, now that winter has arrived it has brought with it the snow and ice for which Michigan is so well known. Once again the Knights of Columbus will answer the call. Volunteers will be needed help keep OLC’s sidewalks safe and passable. Salt and shovels will be available in the shed in back by the family center to any brother knight willing to arrive at church a few minutes early to help clear the walkways of snow and ice before and after masses.

Thank you!

Help Keep our Parish Safe

It is that time of year again, when we will need as many people as we can to help keep the sidewalks clear and safe before and after Mass at Our Lady of Consolation. If you can help clear, just come early to mass and make sure to sign in by any of the doors to the church before grabbing a shovel and clearing off a walk!

Thank you all for your helping keeping everyone safe!

Taking down the art Peace Project

Art Peace Project 2015 was up at the Palace of India from Sept to Oct during Grand Rapids Art Prize. Approximately 400,000 people attended ArtPrize, with many of them walking in the popular areas, and approximately 10,000 cars pass by the intersection where the exhibit was placed.

This year the art was of the thumbs up unborn child to promote our faiths pro-life stance. While we did not have the resources  to get people to add their thumb prints to the artwe are still happy with the showing and promotion to end abortions.

2016 ArtPrize Hopes

We are looking to accomplished the following over the next 9 months so that we can once again work on promoting the pro-life messages during such a large event:

  • Create events and a social media campaign to change students minds and influence the public.
  • Use the art and acquire 10,000 thumb prints and 10,000 “posts” on our Facebook page “Thumbsupgr”
  • Acquire a site where people can go and get their thumb printed.
Volunteers will man the art and help get the thumb print and remind the people to post their picture of getting their thumb printed with a positive message to a person struggling with an unplanned pregnancy.
  • Set up Scheduled promotional days for the art to be at a location, a church or high school. Provide schedule of hours when a thumb print can be taken and also get the persons’ “post” to our facebook.
  • Expand the project to a large scale, pro life project involving multiple churches, protestant and Catholic, all area K of C councils who want to participate.

The end goal for next year is to enter the finished Thumbs Up Ultrasound in ArtPRize 2016, as our artist has a wonderful story of how her life was spared from abortion and her amazing super positive reunion with her dad recently, who never knew he had a daughter.

Thank you for all your support!

New Roof

New Roof

Last month our brother knights came together to help out a fellow parishioner. Her home was in desperate need of a new roof and The Knights of Columbus were there. Brother knight Dennis Milewski was the brains behind the project and in addition to the contribution of treasure, our time and talents were contributed. According to Dennis our council of knights submitted 102 man hours of labor into the project. The result is a badly needed new roof for a fellow parishioner.

Thank you to Dennis Milewski for bringing this opportunity to our council and seeing it through to fruition. It is always an honor to help and assist the members!
